1991
Ex-Curve man Dean Garcia's dated noise-terrorist comeback. In the early-'90s Garcia joined forces with Toni Halliday to weave Curve's aloof Banshee-esque electrogoth alchemy. Garbage, if few others, paid rather close attention to Curve's musical template and reaped the large-scale success which evaded Halliday and Garcia, but Shirley Manson's crew need lose no sleep over Mushiness, a meandering and inconsequential sprawl of experimental electronica in the style of obscure '80s stylists, Hula, Chakk and Slab. Garcia recalls Halliday for a guest vocal and ensures that abrasiveness, attitude, found noises and quirky weirdness are all present and correct; sadly, though, he forgets to pack any tunes. Very disappointing. ** (out of 5) review by Ian Gittins (nicked from 'Q', dated September 1999) |
